Edelweiss took Cecilia's hand and shook it enthusiastically. "It's nice to meet you!" When Dorathea spoke up and swore so casually, it took him aback. "I, uh, hope you're talking about the titans!!" he exclaimed, trying to make a joke to lighten the mood.

Wait, what? Staying the night in titan territory? No. Oh no. No no no no no. It was her first excursion. Why the hell were they staying over night for her first excursion? Why did they leave the wall so late, if they wouldn't be able to make it back? Groups of five. Alright. That meant she should look for someone with experience in this sort of situation, otherwise she'd be screwed.

Hagen watched as the three introduced themselves. He didn't want to have anything to do with them. The last things he needed in this world were emotional attachments. Just let him die, no one to watch, no one to care. That was the best way to leave this world. Die fighting, sure, but when the going gets rough, just take the chance. Take the chance and hope that whatever comes afterlife is better than this cruel world they live in. Hagen decided to slowly inch himself out of the group, step by step.

Raimund's horse charged into the district, revealing one of the most refreshing sights he had seen. The district was almost empty and looked untouched, meaning that there had to be loads of food. What started as a bad bay, was turning into a good night. After leaping off his horse, Raimund hooked onto the nearest tower and climbed to its top in order to get a good view. Turning back to check the gate, he saw as the last of the scouts poured in. "CLOSE THE GATES, SOLDIERS!" Raimund yelled at the top of his lungs, making sure they could hear him.

Must be sociable! Dora looked around at Hagen, "are you shy?"she asked him, moving her eyes down to his feet. He was inching away and she wondered if he knew that. She smiled at him, she was as shy as she thought he was.
Anja looked up to the big mahogany doors across the room. "Yes?" She said, waiting for afeeble maid to announce that dinner was ready for her and her children. Instead, it was an ambassador, probably, from wall rose. He was not dressed as richly as she was, tgat was clear. But he was donned in the top fashions the politicians of wall rose could afford. She didndidn't know this man personally, but suspected he had business regarding merchant ships or what not to discuss with the king. "If its the king youre looking for, he likely wont be about til supper. Anyways, he lives in the east quarters with his wife." The man shook his head, "im sure youre his whore, anja?" Anja had never been spoken to like this before. Her face turned red, she was shocked.

"Me? Shy?" Hagen wasn't surprised that this girl thought he was shy, but she was wrong. "I'm not shy. I just don't see the point in talking to anyone. We're all going to die in a couple years anyway. Building emotional attachments to something you know you're going to lose is foolish. It's like naming a lamb knowing it'll get slaughtered the next day. Pointless tears." Hagen said with a very depressing tone in his voice. It was evident he had no faith in the human race.
--
Heidi and Wenzel closed the gate as ordered, and the operation was underway. Now, time to kill some titans. This is something Raimund excelled at, and he wouldn't be afraid to admit that he enjoyed the feeling of his blades slicing through the neck of a titan. The best idea was to get the ones singled out already. He looked around, and saw one, boring, average titan. It was a slowly walking 7 meter high titan that looked just like your average male. Raimund leapt off of the tower towards the titan using his ODM gear to latch on to the two buildings at his side. The angle was perfect. He was heading at high speeds to a titan that was showing him it's side. It would be a simple cut as he propelled right past it's neck. The speed of the ODM gear was unbelievable, and before the titan even knew what was coming, Raimund had cut a large hole out of the nape of its neck. Beautiful work as always, Raimund thought to himself with a smirk on his face. After the titan had collapsed to the ground and started decomposing, he set his sights on a new titan and pursued it with his ODM gear. He only hoped his scouts were doing as well as him.

Edel listened to Hagen and bit his lip. It was obvious that he'd been through some trauma, something that has probably pushed him to join the military. Kind of the same situation as Edel, actually. Well, hey! That was something they had in common! Not a very nice thing to have in common, but it was still something. "That's not a good way to think about it," he said, matter-of-factly. "Even if the lamb is going to die the next day, isn't it better to name it? To give its life purpose?" He had more to say, but he left it at that; he didn't want to make Hagen mad. The tour continued on, moving away from the training grounds and over to where they kept the harnesses for practicing the 3D maneuver gear.
--
Sera left her horse by a building, not sure if it would still be alive when she got back. Her whole body was shaking. What was the use of all that military training if she couldn't even keep her nerves in check? She took a few deep breaths, and then used her 3D maneuver gear to climb to a rooftop, where she would have a better view of any titans. She still couldn't believe that she was going to be staying the night beyond the wall- on her first excursion! She had to put her faith in the commander; he had to know what he was doing, otherwise he wouldn't have given them the orders, right? Besides, he was famed for having survived beyond the wall for two weeks on his own... with a whole team of scouts here, there was no way they wouldn't survive, right? Just then, a titan wandered into her view from behind a tall building. It moved slowly, and didn't seem like it had noticed her. She grit her teeth. It was far enough away that she was confident she'd be able to avoid it without it noticing her at all- but if she did that, what kind of soldier would she be? And if it just moved on to kill someone else, then she wouldn't be able to live with herself. She took a deep breath, and before she could think about it even more, before she could hesitate even further, she clicked her 3D maneuver gear and went towards the titan. It was a slow, lumbering thing, and from what she could tell, it wasn't an aberrant. She moved to the building behind it, and watched in horror as it slowly turned its head, having finally noticed her. Before it could turn its head fully, though, she grappled around it, and used the momentum to cut into the nape of its neck. She almost yelled with joy when she felt her blade connect with skin, but when she landed on the rooftop, she was devastated to see that the titan hadn't fallen over dead like she'd expected. Instead it loomed over her, neck steaming. Oh God. She hadn't cut deep enough. Oh God it was going to kill her. She closed her eyes, waiting. Oh God oh Go- THUD! The noise was unexpected. She looked up, and saw a man standing in front of her. The same man she had asked about the long-range tactic, in fact. His blade was steaming, and she saw that the titan had collapsed to the ground- that must have been the source of the thud. "You alright, newbie?" the man asked her. This was so embarrassing. First she couldn't remember what the long-distance formation was, and now she'd failed in killing a titan. He must have thought she was a total idiot. "Yeah, thanks, I'm fine," was all she could mutter.

The titans were upon her in a second. Gina dun goofed, bothering about the smoke signals and trying to warn the other scouts. But this was her first time and she always went by the book. Her mind was narrow and never strayed from the rules. Perhaps it would have saved her in this instance, when the titan plucked her up by her curly, dyed red hair, up from her horse. The suddenness should have snapped her neck, but she was only stretched. The titan, a simple 7 meter, smiled at the wretch of a scout and pulled onr of her legs up above her head, snapping it before gina had an idea that shr was even off her horse. Her scream pierced the air but was cut short by the blood, tumbling out her mouth. She was choking while the titan pressed its thumb into her belly. Before sshe was dead, it gobbled her up. She hardly understood what had hapoened.

It was Jeena Albrecht's second expedition, and the North Scouting Regiment's 54th. After good-at-nothing Jeena returned alive from her first expedition, many scouts were curious to see how she would perform on her second. "How in the hell did this girl survive an expedition? Why did she even become a scout? She can't do anything..." she heard people muttering in the background about how useless she was. "I heard she killed tons of titans!", "Oh yeah, who told you that? Her? You know she made everything up. She's probably only alive because she ran away with her tail between her legs!", "Well, I guess she IS good at something: being a coward!" People laughed at her, but she was used to the petty insults by now. She knew, deep in her heart, she was a super hero. Jeena the Brave, they would call her. She would be just like the great Lothar, surviving 7 plus expeditions, and people would look up to her instead. Jeena rode starry-eyed within the formation, dreaming about the great deeds she would accomplish. After a fairly long ride, Jeena arrived at the Hawken district and was told they were spending the night. What? Ridiculous. At first, this seemed preposterous, but then Jeena realized what was happening. The great Lothar was testing her skill! This would be a chance to show her comrades how excellent she was! She charged into the district behind the main troops, and stopped right at the entrance of town. "I WILL GUARD THE GATE WITH MY LIFE, COMRADES! DON'T YOU FEAR, THE GREAT JEENA IS HERE!" She decided, rather than courageously leading the charge, she would stay at the back and defend the gate. She watched as fellow scouts took the charge against the titans. One after one, titan and man fell on the battlefield, a relentless war between the two. Sweat poured down Jeena's brow and tears swelled in her eyes. She was useless, and she knew it.

Cecilia smiled at Edel's enthusiasm, and was immediately taken back my Dora's response to the enthusiastic boy. The swearing was kind of unnecessary, she thought. To each their own though. She followed the group to the 3D maneuver training harnesses. Cecilia watched as a number of her other classmates immediately started volunteering to attach themselves to the training arches, to prove that they had the balancing skills required to maintain stability while using the 3D maneuver gear. She laughed as a number of overconfident trainees fell flat on their faces. One of the female failures stood up and took notice of cecilia's laughter. She immediately rushed over and brought her face uncomfortably close to Cecilia's. "You think you're so funny!?" the failure spat. "I dare you to go over there and try it yourself." Cecilia laughed, "Gladly." Walking over to the arches, Cecilia attached herself to the harnesses, and was pulled up into the air, maintaining balance without any issues.

Yew, having long since departed from the commander, noticed the bright pink hair of one of the other scouts, who was sitting on her horse looking, well, completely helpless. Yew rushed over, and pulled up beside her. "What do you think you're doing, just standing here? There's titans to kill! If we don't get rid of them, we'll never be able to sleep tonight."

Oh no. Someone caught on to Jeena's plan. What would she do? She can't kill a titan. She's useless, but she doesn't admit it. "I have been ordered to watch the gate, soldier! After all, I'm one of our best! We can't reveal our top soldiers to our enemies at the start of the fight! I'm the trick up our sleeve, the ace in the hole, and it would be a mistake to reveal me so early on!" Jeena was a horrible liar. She was blushing with embarrassment, and every sentence that came out of her mouth seemed to be made up on the spot.

Raimund flew from one building to the next, slaying titans like it was nothing. His squad, consisting of Heidi, Wenzel, and two greenhorns, followed behind him, killing many titans as well. He looked at the district again, and realized that there were far more titans than he had thought. The sun was setting, and there was still so much to do. He couldn't say that his scouts weren't pulling their weight, because he saw as some of them killed titan after titan. There was just so many, it could take them another hour or two to finish clean up. "Three titans approaching!" Wenzel shouted, alerting his squad of their danger. "No shit. We aren't blind, Wenzel. You'd think we'd notice three 15m classes walking up to us." Raimund replied, with a joking tone in his voice. "Touche, commander!" Wenzel laughed. Then he gestured for the greenhorns to watch as him and Heidi shot off with their maneuver gear to deal with these titans. Raimund followed behind them and watched as Heidi expertly leaped from one head to another, distracting all the titans at once. Then, when they were least expecting it, Wenzel zipped past one's neck. SLICE! He looped down, and back up, zipping past another neck. SLICE! In a similar motion, he headed back down so he could zip up past the third titan's neck, but something was wrong. He never came back up. "WENZEL!" Raimund shouted, worrying for his faithful companion. As Raimund approached, he saw what had happened. There was a fourth titan. A 5m class, hiding behind the height of the buildings, and in it's mouth, Wenzel. "YOU BASTARD!" Raimund was filled with rage, and with lightning speed he cut the 5m bastard into pieces, leaving his blades unusable. He pulled the now slimy Wenzel out of the titan's corpse. He was still alive! "Hah! You lucky bastard! You had me worried sick, Wenzel!" Raimund was relieved to see that he was okay, but he failed to notice the large gash on Wenzel's stomach. With a couple of coughs, Wenzel spoke, "Shit, Raimund, I think you are blind! I'm bleeding out here! Either get me to a safe place, or save yourself!" After a stark realization of Wenzel's wound, Raimund looked up to Heidi and ordered her to take Wenzel away. Heidi. Where the hell was Heidi? After loud screaming and a crunch of bones and flesh, it was obvious where Heidi was. The expression on Raimund's face went from relieved to emotionless within 5 seconds. He shot up to the titan's neck, finishing the job that Wenzel was supposed to. SLICE! As the titan dropped to the ground, Raimund caught sight of the two greenhorns, standing by in the background, watching in fear. Cowards, but forgivable. Raimund rushed to the mouth of the third titan in hopes of finding Heidi, but instead, he found her mangled, chewed up corpse. The great Lothar fell to his knees in complete devastation. The death of a close friend never got old.

Edel had been waiting for a reply from Hagen, but the other boy seemed lost in thought, and upon seeing people trying the harnesses, he quickly forgot all else. "Oh cool! I want to try!" he exclaimed in excitement, quickly running up to one of the harnesses, and once the other trainee had finished with it, he quickly got in. The straps were a little difficult to figure out, but once he was all hooked up, balancing was easy. His ballet had been perfect practice for this kind of thing. It was actually disappointing how easy it was. "Hey, Hagen!" he yelled to the boy, hoping to get his attention. "Come over here!" He had an idea.
--
Emmerich watched below him as he flew through the air, looking for titans to kill. He had killed a few now, and it was getting harder to find them. The titans numbers were thinning, which was a good sign. Hopefully it wouldn't take too much longer to clear them out. He saw the bodies of four titans below him, and noticed the Commander, seeming distraught. He quickly descended. "What happened here? Do you need help?" he asked, spotting the injured Wenzel lying on the ground.

Come over here? What the hell could this idiot-boy want with him now? Reluctantly, Hagen walked towards Edelwiess, and in a slightly terrified voice asked "What do you want, Edelwiess?" Honestly. Hagen was terrified.
--
It took Raimund a little while to realize he was being talked to by a fellow scout. What happened? Need help? Raimund didn't know how to respond. He had just lost a close friend, and he wasn't thinking straight. Death. He was hit by the smell of it. He could smell it all around him, pointless, meaningless, death. What hope did the humans have against these monsters... "What hope do we have, soldier! How can we beat these monsters? After everything we've done, and still nothing has changed. I am and always will be loyal to the Wings of Freedom, but I just don't get it anymore..." Raimund was lost in thought, and he didn't mind sharing his thoughts with his allies.

"Okay! Just stand in front of me, with your back facing me, and hold your arms out like this," Edel demonstrated, holding his arms out at a 90 degree angle from his body, making a T shape. Now that Hagen was in front of him, he was realizing that the other boy was quite a bit taller than him. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. But hey, they'd never know unless they tried!
--
"Us, sir? We have no hope at all," Emmerich responded. "But our children, our grandchildren, they still have a chance. We have to pave the way for their future, we have to give them hope. Now come on, we have to get off the ground before we're eaten." Emmerich sounded like some cheesey propaganda poster and he knew it, but he knew he had to get the Commander moving. If he died here, the scouts would soon follow; Lothar was the only one who could get them through this.

As Edel demonstrated how he wanted Hagen to stand, one thought occurred in his head. No. Nononononononono. This was never going to happen. "No." That was all Hagen had to say.
--
"You're right. What's your name, soldier?" Raimund got off his knees, brushing the dust off of his pants. He shook his head, joining it with reality once more. Heidi may be dead, but Wenzel was still alive, and Raimund needed to make sure he stayed that way. After looking into this soldier's eyes, Raimund realized that he wasn't only fighting for Wenzel, but he was fighting for all of the scouts with him today. He couldn't give up when so many lives looked up to him, relying on him for advice and guidance.

Edel first looked surprised, then hurt. "I haven't even told you what I was planning yet...!" he said disappointedly. "You just have to stand there! Why don't you want to do it?"
--
"Baer, sir. Emmerich Baer," Emmerich responded, and looked to the soldier lying injured on the ground. There wasn't time for any sort of first aid, not right now. They would just have to move him somewhere off of the ground, maybe into a building where he'd be sheltered. "Can you move?" he asked the soldier, knowing he probably couldn't and that Emmerich would likely need to carry him on his back. It was still worth asking though.

Hagen's face was filled with pain. His gritted teeth were showing. Slowly and cautiously, he approached Edel and assumed the stance he was asked to. Hagen felt bad turning him down like that, so he figured he would give this a chance. "Ok, what now? Can I go?" Hagen was already regretting his decision.
--
Wenzel coughed and tried to sit up. He managed, but that was all he could do. "I can't stand up, commander." Raimund looked to Wenzel, realized the situation he was in. "Alright, Emmerich Baer. I want you to carry him out of here, and head towards the front gate if you can. He's a tough son of a bitch." It was true. Believe it or not, this wasn't the first time Wenzel had a taste of titan saliva.
3 years ago, in another expedition, it was Wenzel's first time beyond the wall. He was ordered to slay the titans at the gate, and after killing one, another got the jump on him. The titan's hand wrapped around his body, and slowly placed him in it's mouth, face pressing against it's tongue. Just like now, Raimund rushed in and saved Wenzel from the grasp of the titan, and Wenzel felt forever in his debt. Because of this, Raimund wouldn't believe if Wenzel just died of blood loss. He was a fighter, and he could survive this.
"Now you gotta get Wenzel outta here, Emmerich. I have some... unfinished business..." Raimund said, pointing to two more titans that were slowly approaching.
